The CLT Committee is calling for all directors interested in presenting shows in 2013 to submit their proposals before or at the Committee meeting on Tuesday 14th August.

The following Directors Information is available as a PDF Document

What you need to know and do if you wish to direct a production

Before the end of June in the year preceding the year you wish to direct, notify a Committee member of your wish to be included in the list of potential Directors. (The committee decides on the new year’s program in September)

Make ready the following:

  • The name of the play, its Author, type (Drama, Comedy, Panto etc.) - CLT has around 400 assorted scripts which can be perused.

  • A brief synopsis of the play.

  • How many players by gender.

  • How you would like to present the play e.g. onstage, in the round, filmed etc.

  • Whether special costumes are required.

  • The period in which the play is set and any features of the play that might appeal to the public.

  • Have a general idea how much you would like to spend on the play. The Business Manager can assist in this. He has some printed budget information on previous plays.

  • The time of year you would like to perform the play.

  • What kind of set you envisage. A sketch would help.

  • Have a backup play (which also needs to be approved by the committee), or idea, if the original fails to be cast due to shortages of personnel/ talent, such as a play with fewer people in it, especially males.

Think about who you would like as a Producer and Stage Manager. (Ask the committee for suggestions if you need help)

If you wish to direct a Musical then you must have:

  • Lined up a musical director and a rehearsal pianist or acceptable alternatives, eg. Recorded music and a method of playing it at rehearsals as there will be no access to the sound and lighting box or the wardrobe because there will be another play in rehearsal for about your first six weeks.

  • A Choreographer who has agreed to do the show with you.

Any production featuring commercially available music must have permission to use that music from the appropriate licensing organization. The Committee can assist with this process. Applications for rights to use commercial music can take a long time to process; it is advisable to identify music requirements early after your proposal has been accepted by the committee.

Present this information to the Committee when requested, preferably in person. This will probably be in July or August and could be at a different time than the normal Committee meeting.

Have a copy of the script available for a Committee member to read.

NOTE: It is CLT’s policy that, although you may have ideas of people who could fit the parts in the play, all productions MUST have at least two advertised audition times. This allays the public opinion of a ‘Closed Shop’, which severely restricts the inflow of new blood and talent to the Company.

It is the Committee’s intention to have the programme for the next year completed by September 30 each year.
